Their name means youth. “To the lord we are all youngbloodz so it’s like you never stop learning as you get older,” says member J-Bo. Duo J-Bo and Sean Paul dropped their sophomore album, Drankin’ Patnaz, on August 26 with little buzz except for an abundance of radio spins for dirty south anthem, “Damn!” Unlike other rappers, The YoungBloodZ made this album something to pop in while you drinkin’ on a little something-something and just having a good time—not full of low blows to other artists. “We ain’t got no beef with nobody,” Sean Paul says. “You ain’t gonna hear no beef.. nobody bashing nobody.” “Basically it’s an energy album. When you get off working and your boss has been trippin’ all day man you want to pop our album in and ride out,” he adds. This album follows up their debut, Against da Grain, which included the chart singles "U Way (How We Do It)" and "85," featuring Big Boi from Outkast and Cutty Cartel of Jim Crow. Drankin’ Patnaz took seven months to record and features guest spots by Killer Mike on “Hustle,” Backbone on “Lean Low” and Lil’ Jon on “Damn!” Produced by Jazze Pha (Nappy Roots, Cash Money), Oomp Camp (local Atlanta producer) and the Attic Crew’s Mark Twayne (Mac 10, Pastor Troy), the album’s sound is full of rowdy, at times repetitive, up-tempo beats. Sean Paul and J-Bo grew up as childhood friends in Atlanta collaborating musically throughout high school until later joining the Attic Crew and next coming to the attention of LaFace Records, who signed them immediately and released their first album in 1999. Recently the two switched to So So Def before dropping their second record. It was just the right time for a change, J-Bo says. “Arista’s got the ABC now, Arista Black Culture, and So So is up in here too,” he adds. “I think it’s better now for us. It’s helping us get out there ‘cause we’ve been away for a minute.” Lastly, advice to fans from Sean Paul: “Pick up a bottle of tequila before you buy the album.” |
