| In 2002 an Army brat and aspiring singer exploded on the charts with a harmonious, innovative debut album entitled All I Have. Girlish, fierce, sexy and sweet, All I Have spawned the smash "Why Don't We Fall In Love" (produced by a then under-the-radar Rich Harrison) and let it be known that the new breed of hip hop/soul's chief practitioner was a 22-year-old, DC beauty named Amerie. |

In some cases stubbornness is a good thing, in the case of 19-year-old Nigerian born Amarachi Onyeise it is a great thing.
Amarachi, whose name is Nigerian meaning, “God’s grace,” has graced the fashion runways and publicity campaigns for Boost Mobile, Houston designer Tiki Glam, Tropicouture and that’s only the beginning. “I don’t go out a lot,” she says. “I guess because it got old. I don’t go out anymore. I’m always looking for stuff to do, jobs, always looking for a photographer.”
Most fashion models such as Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Giselle Bundchen are over 5’9. Naomi at 5’9 ½, Tyra and Giselle 5’11. Amarachi is 5’8 without heels, yet her height doesn’t deter her from setting her aspirations to internationally known and the highly prestigious runways of New York, Milan, Paris.
“Look at Kate Moss, she can do it. I can do it,” Amarachi says, “It doesn’t discourage me against going against girls on the runways, because I can still stand out.”
What makes Amarachi stand out is her walk, a walk which has some comparing her to legendary iconic supermodel Naomi Campbell, but yet Amarachi is fiercely set on carving her own niche in the fashion world. “It feels really good, but I just really want to be me.”
She cites her round face, high cheekbones and dark skin as her attributes, “..dark skin is in,” she smiles adding, “nowadays, they say personality does it.” She works out enjoying spinning, lifting weights, stretching, eating African food, rice, plantains, foofoo. “I love to eat. I love food that’s why I have to stay in the gym.” she laughs.
Musically her faves are Jack Johnson, John Mayer and British singer Craig David, “Oh gosh, I wanna meet him someday-he’s so talented.”
It’s been two years since Amarachi began modeling, and even though she’s faced some obstacles, some doubters, and a few nay-sayers along the way-it hasn’t decreased her drive.
“Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned on my own. You have to fall down and hit your face before you get started.” She later adds, “A lot of times I quit, I didn’t want to do it (modeling), but I said this is for me.
It’s been a long hard journey, but I’m going to take the risk.” In the meantime Amarachi, is constantly adding to her resume, in addition to modeling, she enjoys singing and songwriting, “I just started getting into that…I have a couple of songs.”
With a career in modeling and other projects in the works, there’s no telling where Amarachi will be. When asked what she would like to be doing five years from now, Amarachi responds, “Traveling the world. I hate staying idle.”
